Where and How to Learn Blender

I've seen many people in the community try to find a place to learn Blender, and ask what to watch to actually learn. Almost everyone is directed to CGCookie, as it is by far the best hub for Blender tutorials. I know many will argue that Youtube, or their Udemy course is a better solution. Let's be honest here, you want to learn Blender, not learn how to create a single object, and then get lost when creating something else. Not only that, you don't want to pay more than you should have to accomplishing that goal. So in this article, I'll give you a list of videos to watch when visiting CGcookie to find exactly what you need.

Before I start, I want to explain why I'm doing this. At this point in time, it is not easy for a new user to traverse the Blender Cookie site, and find intro-level tutorials easily. Of course, CGCookie is in the process of going through an extreme overhaul, and this will not be a problem for much longer. Until then....

To start, let's look at all of the introduction tutorials they have, and for each and every section you would need to learn in Blender when starting.

Once you feel comfortable to take on something more advanced, here are some of the courses offered covering different areas of modeling. Character modeling, Game Asset Modeling, and Architecture Modeling, only to name a few on the Blender Cookie site. Of course, these are courses that require a "citizenship" at CGCookie, but $18USD each month is a small price to pay for access to professional courses.

Lastly, if you are really serious about 3D modeling, and want to go full force, I would recommend the Mastering Modeling Workshop offered at Blender Cookie.

This now self-paced workshop, instructed by Jonathan Williamson, is based on a 4 week course with over 50 videos offering 20 hours of content. It is one of those courses that really test you as you learn, and you come out of it with the knowledge to model anything.

Once you've gone through this list, or enough of them to feel very comfortable using Blender, you can then start watching any of the Blender videos at Blender Cookie with confidence.

If you've made it this far, you may wonder, "But what about Blender Guru!?!", and don't worry, I did not forget Andrew Price and his awesome tutorials. Let's be honest, BG's tutorials are not for new users. These tutorials are for a later time, when you are ready to start learning some pretty advanced methods. That's not to say that CGCookie doesn't have tutorials offering such as well, but you should always keep tabs on Blender Guru as well. One way to accomplish this, is to check BlenderNation each day.

I hope this has helped someone, and if so, welcome to the Blender world! Good luck, and happy blending!
